I just finished watching an episode of Piers Morgan Tonight on CNN, Piers was interviewing a comedian I’ve always enjoyed, Rick Gervais. There was an interesting exchange towards the end that I found really striking. Emphasis below by me.

Gervais: Work hard and then you can have a laugh, then you can have a drink.
Piers Morgan: Indeed.
PM: Do you get to enjoy the fruits of your hard work, do you think?
RG: No, I enjoy the hard work. That’s what I enjoy. I wake up and it’s a privilege that I can have an idea. Nothing gives me an adrenaline rush like an idea.
What a privilege that I can have an idea and start working on that. So no, ever never take that for granted.
As long as I try my best and I’m proud at what I did, I can’t ask for anything else.
And bob dylan said, a man can consider himself a success if he wakes up in the morning, goes to bed at night and in between does what he wanted.
